The roman city of Trieste, Italy

Trieste is a city of 210,000 inhabitants in Italy, it is the capital of the region (called Regione in Italian) Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
In ancient times (2nd century BCE), Trieste was a roman colony named Tergeste (in Latin). The area became rich under the Romans and after the fall of the Western Roman Empire and the Byzantines to 788 CE. In the 12th century the city become independent and for few centuries was fighting against Venetians protected by Austria, which made part of the same Monarchy - the  Habsburg - with, until the 17th century.

Trieste is also known as a city that has many hi-tech research centers. Among them there is an excellence multidisciplinary research center located in Basovizza, near the Slovenian border. There  scientists from all over the world by means of a synchrotron called Elettra can test material physics properties and study the material composition. There is also the International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) which deals with theoretical and mathematical physics. The institute is based on the cooperation of the UN through UNESCO, IAEA, and the italian government. ICTP has also a lot of cooperation with the University of Trieste. Remaining in the scientific sphere, the Trieste Observatory was able to provide to astronomers and astronomy lovers a suitable place for the observation of celestial bodies.

Trieste is an almost complete tourist attraction. You can climb in the Val Rosandra hill or swim in the Adriatic Sea. In summer, Barcola's coastal areas are visited by locals and migrants. Miramare Castle and San Giusto Castle add to the archaeological attractions. Many activities are held in Piazza Unità d'Italia. In this place, there are often music performances, watching together football matches, and New Year celebrations.
